POLICY STATEMENT ON PHYSICIAN EXTENDERS Live Oak Cardiology may employ Physician Extenders (PEs) or Mid-level Providers (Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists or Physician Assistants) who are trained and qualified to evaluate, diagnose and treat cardiac conditions under the direct supervision of Live Oak cardiologists. These educated, highly skilled and empathetic health care providers permit the cardiologists to treat a larger number of clinical problems in the clinic and in the hospital, help improve outcomes, prevent complications and reduce the number of emergency room admissions. They do this by engaging in more frequent and earlier follow ups than would otherwise be possible for problems needing repeated adjustments in therapy, managing unexpected problems, seeing walk-in patients, and by spending more time addressing complex issues than our busy physician schedules will permit. They are able to obtain medical histories, perform physical exams, order and interpret diagnostic studies, recommend and prescribe medical treatment, integrate health promotion education into routine visits, and collaborate with other health care providers. They are not a substitute for our cardiologists who are the final arbiters of evaluation and treatment, and their work is evaluated either immediately or the same day by the supervising cardiologist. All new patients, consultations, and emergencies in the office will be promptly evaluated by one of our cardiologists on-site. Our experience and that of our patients with PEs has been positive, particularly as it reflects a more personal, extended and reciprocal encounter than would otherwise be possible. PEs are BLS and ACLS qualified, complete continuing medical education annually, and pride themselves on their finely-honed clinical skill, conservative judgment and responsiveness to patients’ needs and questions. Our PEs represent an irreplaceable asset that permits us to provide excellent clinical care in a timely fashion, and keeps our clinics flowing smoothly and efficiently. They allow us to tend to unexpected emergencies, procedures, and more difficult patient issues while decreasing patient wait time in the clinic. You can be assured that your encounters with them will address your problems empathetically and effectively. They have our complete confidence and fully represent the patient-oriented Live Oak Cardiology philosophy.
